This campout took a bit of a twist from how we’d originally planned it. the week before, it had rained. Like, a LOT. So, due to the trail being closed for flooding, we weren’t able to hike Old Rag like we’d hoped. Then, the night before, there was conditions for a tornado in the area we’d changed to be camping instead. So, rather than being scared away from the whole trip, we decided to have it be a day hike at a mountain much closer to home.
In the morning, we headed to the Isaac Walton League, where there was a scout carrying out their eagle project. We helped her out with it, of course, and after a solid lunch, we headed out for a hike that lead up to ‘Big Rock’, a rock that, unsurprisingly, was pretty big.
The hike was incredibly steep at the beginning, with countless switchbacks. We passed a part on the trail that had become a waterfall, caused by the recent rain. After we’d reached Big Rock, we were able to turn around and have a detour down to a place on the trail called the Devils Racecourse, a long clearing full of these giant rocks, perfect for scrambling, all along the trail.
After the hike, we went back to the IWL, made a campfire, played some games, made yummy food, and just in general had a great time. A solid plan from a few unexpected turns of events, don’t you think?
